Strathspey travel to Strathglass in the Mowi WCA National Division this Saturday, the two sides completed the podium in North 2 last year behind title winners Glenurquhart and go into Saturday knowing 2 points will put them in the conversation for promotion this time round. We spoke to Strathspey’s Charlotte Bissett ahead of the game.
You’ve had a tough but competitive start to the season, with a defeat to Dunadd and an exciting 3-3 draw with Badenoch. How do you feel the team is shaping up ahead of this weekend’s match against Strathglass?
We’ve had a pretty positive start to the season. Both games were hard but the girls have been working really hard through preseason on fitness, which I think really showed in both games. We’re really motivated for the challenge this weekend.
You’ve already scored four goals in two games—what’s been working well for you in front of goal, and do you feel your role in the team has changed this season?
Last season has given myself and the team a huge boost in confidence which has definitely helped coming into this season. I was captain last year and that was great, but now I get to go out and enjoy every minute on the pitch with a little less pressure. Being surrounded by a really positive, determined group of players makes that a lot easier.
Strathglass finished ahead of you in the league last season, but with the new Mowi National Division structure, this year presents a fresh challenge. How important is this match in setting the tone for the season?
With the new league structure, every match will be tough. Strathglass is no different, so we have to make sure we’re giving it our all until the final whistle. Getting the 2 points on Sunday would put us in a good position in the league and we can build from there.
With the league restructuring, Strathspey will now face teams from the south as well. Are you enjoying the challenge of coming up against new teams from the South such as Dunadd?
Yeah, it’s always great to play teams you’ve never come up against. Facing some new teams will definitely bring some exciting battles and new tactics into play.
What do you think will be the key to getting a result against Strathglass this weekend, and what kind of game are you expecting?
Strathglass are always a tough team to play. We’ve got to fight for every ball, take every chance we get and leave it all on the pitch!
