Mowi Game of the Week - Lochaber vs Badenoch
Claire Delaney Interview
This Sunday, Lochaber welcome Badenoch to Spean Bridge in a repeat of the 2024 Mowi Valerie Fraser Camanachd Cup Final. Lochaber came out on top that day, but Badenoch sit top of the league with an 100% record, we sat down with Lochaber’s Claire Delaney to preview the game…
It’s your first meeting with Badenoch since that famous Cup Final win — how much does that result still fuel the squad?
Lochaber Ladies put in a huge performance in last years final to win and so it definitely gives us confidence knowing we can beat Badenoch. That said this is a different season, squads change Lochaber have introduced some fantastic young players to the squad this season and so will see how it goes.
With only two games played so far this season, do you feel Lochaber are still finding rhythm?
Yeah we have only had 2 games so far with a significant gap between them, other teams in our leage are on game 4 or 5 so it can be hard to get a momentum going with such big gaps between games.
You got on the scoresheet against Kinlochshiel — how important is it for you to lead by example in these tight matches?
Think it was a lucky goal and definitely not one of my better ones. Being one of the oldest in the squad I definitely feel that I’m more vocal on a pitch but playing wise all girls all know what they need to do every week.
Badenoch are unbeaten and top of the table — what’s the key to breaking their momentum?
In the final fitness and hardwork was key. Badenoch are a fit and physical team like ourselves and so is always a tight game. Think in a game like this a strong defence is vital, hardworking girls in the middle and the forward line taking all their chances to get past their defence and keeper.
What would a win this weekend mean for Lochaber’s belief and league ambitions?
A win on Sunday would be fantastic, but leagues aren’t won on a single game and so whatever way it goes Lochaber will continue to work hard in both the league and cup campaigns.
