Mowi Game of the Week - Oban Camanachd vs Newtonmore
Daniel MacVicar Interview
This Saturday, the Mowi Shinty Season throws up for 2026! Our game of the week sees Oban Camanachd host Newtonmore at Mossfield in what will be a tough contest for both sides. Having occupied 3rd and 2nd place, as well as facing off in the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup semi-final, both sides were much improved last season and will be confident of replicating this success in the 2026 season. Daniel MacVicar is once again the Oban Camanachd captain after a strong season where he netted 9 league goals and earned another call up to the Scotland side, and we spoke to him ahead of the big match.
It’s a tough test to start off the season as you welcome Newtonmore, how are you feeling ahead of the game?
We are all looking forward to getting going this Saturday. We have had a good pre season and are happy to have a home draw for our opening game.
Camanachd have won 2 out of 2 in pre season, how do you feel preparations have gone?
Preparations have gone well we’ve been able to try a few things which had been good. Lochaber especially was a good test for us.
With the likes of Connor Howe and Gary McKerracher returning this season, how strong do you feel the squad is?
It’s brilliant to have Connor and Gary back who have not played in a while. I felt that last year we had the best squad depth we’ve ever had, so to be able to add those two players to that puts the team in a great position heading into the new season.
Individually you had a strong campaign last season, what are your aims for the season?
Personally, I want to be more vocal as captain than I was last year. I also want to score more goals than last season, which is my main personal aim each year.
