Congratulations to Bute II who won the MOWI South Division 2 title on Saturday with a 4-0 win against Oban Celtic.
In what could have potentially been a nervy day at Ganavan, Bute started off very strongly with Rory McDonald putting the islanders 1-0 up inside the opening third of the half. A Ruairidh Soane double before half-time meant that Bute would go in 3-0 up at the break and all but certain to win the league title. It was more subdued from Bute in the second half with Craig Speirs putting the icing on the cake with the only goal of the second half.
This result meant that despite Ardnamurchan’s late winner at home to Aberdour the league title would belong to Bute. A well deserved achievement from a side who have only been defeated once this season in the league – away to ‘Dour back in May. Bute also had a run to the Semi-Finals of the MKM Building Supplies (Oban) Bullough Cup and the islanders will be hopeful that their first team can leapfrog Col-Glen in South 1 in the remainder of the season.
Stewart Stirling Bute II Manager said:
“We started pretty fast the boys knew they had to get the job done over there. Ardnamurchan have been on our tail all season so credit to them but it was great to get it over the line with a game to spare. For such a young squad we have been punching above our weight – 9/12 of our team are U17 but the commitment has been amazing. At the start of the season we were hoping no lower than mid-table and we have done that. We were unfortunate in the Bullough Cup but delighted to have made up for it by going unbeaten since our Semi-Final exit to Kilmory. Individually, Ryan Tierney (15) played one week against Uddingston (H) and never looked back – he has been outstanding since, Captain, Liam Ferguson (17) has been between the first team and the second team and has been a great inspiration. However, to a man everyone has been immense this year. The team were determined to get a trophy this year and it has been a pleasure to be involved with such a young, committed group of guys.
You can hear from Bute Captain Liam Ferguson in this week’s episode of the Russwood Half-Swing Shinty Podcast which is out on Thursday at 9pm.
Once again the Camanachd Association would like to offer its warmest congratulations to Bute for winning Mowi South Division 2.
