Mowi Game of the Week - Caberfeidh vs Newtonmore

Iain Robinson Interview

This Saturday, the Mowi Shinty Season throws up for 2025! Mowi Premiership runners-up Caberfeidh welcome Newtonmore to Castle Leod on Saturday. Ahead of the big fixture we caught up with Newtonmore’s 2024 top goalscorer Iain Robinson.

You scored 13 league goals last season – what are your personal targets for this season?

Personally my job is obviously to score goals and I always like to improve on the previous season. Last year wasn’t great for me personally so I would like to improve on that massively this season. As a team I think we can be much better this year also. We came close last year to making the mactavish final which we haven’t done for a long time and then we were unfortunate in other competitions not to progress. Everyone at the club believes we should be up there challenging for trophies but we have to start showing that on the pitch week in week out.

You finished only two points off Caberfeidh last year – how crucial is it to begin with a strong performance and set an early tone?

Starting strong is really important for every team and I think that’s what makes it so difficult at times. We had a terrible start last year which we want to avoid this season. That will be easier said than done though as Caberfeidh are off the back of a really good season. Going up to Castle Leod is always tough and I expect Saturday to be nothing different.

Are you expecting a close game?

Of course I fully expect it to be a really tight game. Last season we managed to win up there but Cabers game back and beat us at the eilan so we seemed to be pretty well matched. We will definitely have to be at our best to take anything from the game this Saturday.

What do you think Cabers strengths are going into Saturday?

They have a lot of strengths. I think the obvious ones are Blair and Craig Morrison. Blair is so solid at the back and sweeps everything and Craig is a great asset to them when he’s scoring 30/40 goals a season. We will have a tough job stopping them on Saturday. Kevin Bartlett is another player who is key for them, he’s a great reader of the game and his distribution is excellent. They are really solid all over the pitch so we are in for a tough afternoon.
