Kingussie Coronated at Mossfield

Kingussie have been crowned Mowi Premiership champions once again after an emphatic 5-0 win against Oban Camanachd. The victory, which took place at Mossfield Park, saw Captain Calum Grant lift the title for the reigning champions.

Kingussie’s dominance this season has been undeniable. In the league, they have gone unbeaten in 17 matches, securing 15 victories and drawing only twice. Their ability to combine resolute defence with clinical attacking play has made them unstoppable. Among the key players this season, Dylan Borthwick has been a standout, netting 20 Mowi Premiership goals (43 in all competitions) to propel his side to the top. James Falconer and Ruaridh Anderson have also been pivotal, both hitting double figures in the goalscoring charts.

Their season has been defined by consistency, marked by big wins against Lochaber (6-0 and 8-4), even when tested, such as in the thrilling 5-2 draw against Caberfeidh – Kingussie going 2-0 down before mounting a stirring comeback – the red and blue hoops showcased their resilience.

Speaking after the title-clinching win against Skye last month, Kingussie Captain Calum Grant said: “The win against Skye in Portree was a great way to clinch the league and cap off a fantastic season for the club. The task now is to finish strongly in the remaining league fixtures whilst also giving our younger players the chance to develop their game at the top level.” Given the results that have come since then and Eoin Baikie and Iain Fraser both bagging goals in the last couple of matches, its fair to say that task has been fulfilled.

Kingussie’s final fixture against Kinlochshiel will offer a chance for the champions to cap off a remarkable season. However, Kinlochshiel are not the kind of side that rolls over and thy will provide a stern final test for the Grand Slam winners. For Kingussie, the league triumph is yet another chapter in their illustrious history, but the hunger for more silverware is ever-present. With the final whistle yet to blow on their 2024 campaign, the Kings have shown why they are still the benchmark for success in shinty.
