On Sunday 28th April, the Camanachd Association held their second ever girls only primary tournament at Braeview Park, Beauly. The event welcomed 80 girls from clubs across the North of Scotland.
The teams played across two pitches, each team playing each other once throughout the course of the afternoon in short 8 minute games.
The rain stayed off for the most part and the hot food and drink in the Beauly Tea Hut was welcomed by parents and players alike. All teams were in great spirits and some excellent shinty was on show throughout the day. The top four teams that progressed into the semi-finals after the round of games were Beauly, Lovat, Kilmallie and Kinlochshiel.
After two very well contested semi-final games that saw the competitive Beauly V Kilmallie game go to extra time, Kilmallie progressed into the final to play the other semi-final winners, Kinlochshiel who after a slow semi-final start going behind in the second half ran out 4-1 winners.
The final was a very exciting physical game between the two teams. They both battled hard and contested in an excellent game of shinty that proved to be very close. However, it was Kinlochshiel that found the back of the net through the impressive Maura MacKenzie who had been on form all day, she netted her second shortly after, weaving her way past a strong Kilmallie defence. Kilmallie never let their heads drop through and managed to peg one back through a clean strike from Charley Kennedy. This led to an onslaught of Kilmallie pressure with Kinlochshiel making a goal line clearance in the final minute of play. They managed to hold on though and Captain Maura was presented the BR Plumbing and Heating Girls Primary Trophy for 2024 by Jamie MacLennan, Chair of Beauly Shinty Club.
A massive thanks goes to all players, coaches and parents for attending the event, as well as to Beauly Shinty Club for hosting and setting up the pitches. Thanks also goes to Iain Cochrane for taking the days photos. Further thanks also goes to Dario, Louie and Connor who refereed the games throughout the day. Finally, a huge thank you to Barry MacDonald and BR Plumbing and Heating for sponsoring the event, the support and sponsorship is very much appreciated.
