Mowi Game of the Week - Lochside Rovers vs GMA II

Calum Robb Interview

It’s Mowi South Division 1 action this weekend as Lochside Rovers welcome Glasgow Mid Argyll II to Ganavan Park. Ahead of the game, we caught up with Calum Robb to get his thoughts on the upcoming fixture and the GMA II  season so far.

How have preparations gone ahead of this weekend’s important clash against Lochside Rovers?

A couple of weeks ago, some of us in the second team for Saturday were part of the team that beat Aberdour 5-1 in the Mòd Cup final, which has boosted our confidence. Unfortunately, training has been a bit of a struggle with darker nights in the last few weeks, but we’re looking forward to a good game of shinty.

What kind of challenge do you expect from them this weekend?

Since the fixture this weekend is a title decider for Lochside, I’m sure they will be putting everything into the game to try and win it. At the same time, we will be playing a very young squad due to player unavailability and the university league starting back up, which quite a few of our players compete in. I’m sure it will be a great experience for our young players and good preparation for them ahead of the U17 London Shield South finals on the 8th. I’m sure we’ll be able to give Lochside a good match.

From your first time playing against Lochside Rovers this season to now, what has changed in how you play?

We played Lochside just a couple of weeks ago; however, that showed us how they set up and play, and we’ll use that to our advantage on Saturday.

How would you assess the team’s performance and progress throughout the season in what is a transitional period for the club?

It has been a hard season for us this year; however, a lot of our games have been a lot closer than perhaps the results suggest. We’ve also struggled with having a consistent lineup this year, as we have been quite unlucky with injuries, and a lot of our second team players have had to go up to the first team to help cover. On the positive side, we have brought a lot of youth into the squad this year, which has been very positive and helped a lot of us develop, and I’m sure this will start to show in the next few seasons.
