The Mowi WCA National continues this weekend with the Mowi Game of the Week bringing together Glenurquhart and Lochaber. To preview the game we caught up with Lochaber’s Missy Cameron.
Missy, a great start to the season last week as you defeated newly promoted Kinlochshiel 3-0 at Rearaig. What was it like being back in action?
It was great to be back playing! It was a difficult, physical game against a strong, young Kinlochshiel side who will do well in this league. We were slow to get going but pleased to get the win and lots to build on going forward.
You managed to bag your first two goals of the campaign too, have you set any targets this year?
No, I’ve scored around 1 goal a season for about the last 10 years so I’ve already doubled my usual quota, we’ll see what this season brings!
You’re on the road again this weekend, this time to Drumnadrochit to face Glenurquhart, having played them a couple of times last season what do you make of them? What are their strengths?
It’s always a difficult game against Glenurquhart, they are strong in attack with Hazel Hunter and old Lochaber Ladies player Zoe Smith so we’ll need a good performance from our back 4 again this week.
Lochaber had a really strong 2023 finishing 2nd in the Mowi WCA National Division, is the plan to kick on and win the league in 2024?
Yes, we want to improve on last year. We’ve never won the league before so always a goal, it will be a interesting season with the increase in the number of teams in the league so squad size will be important. We’ve been disappointed with our performances in the cup the last couple of seasons so hoping for a better run this season.
Last year, Lochaber prided themselves on a strong defence, conceding just 18 in 14 games, do you think that will be the same this campaign?
Our defence is one of our strongest areas on the pitch with some of our most experienced players, we’ll be looking to improve on last years goals against.
