Mowi Game of the Week - Skye vs Lochaber

Joanne Gillanders Interview

The new 12-a-side Premier Cup competition debuts this weekend, as Skye face off against Lochaber in their quest to be the first side to have their name engraved on the new trophy. Ahead of the match we spoke to Lochaber shot stopper Joanne Gillanders to get her thoughts.

Lochaber make the trip to Skye in the inaugural Premier Cup fixture, how are you looking forward to the game?

We are looking forward to it, but we know it will  be a tough game, Skye are a good team, especially when they are at home so as a team we need to try and get a hold of the game from the first whistle and not let Skye settle into the game and find their rhythm.

It’s another chance for Lochaber to pick up silverware, can the squad put together a strong cup run?

As a team you always want to try and go the distance in cups, we know we are capable of it however the cup being 12-a-side adds a different dimension to the game and we need to adjust to that quickly.

Outside club shinty, you were inbetween the sticks for the Mowi Shinty/Camogie international. How did that feel?

Obviously it is a real honour to play for your country, so of course I was delighted to play. It’s a completely different game the speed and skill of the game is  unmatched. It is always an enjoyable game to be involved in.

When we spoke to manager Andy MacDonald he mentioned the club wide emphasis that has been placed on upping fitness levels, how has this had a positive impact on the team?

As the game has developed over the years fitness has become a key factor in the games so it is important that as a team we all put the effort in to improve our own fitness levels. As a team we have worked hard at this and hopefully it will show in the game this weekend and for the rest of the season.
