Mowi Game of the Week - Caberfeidh vs Kingussie

Ruaridh Anderson Interview

The sole fixture in the Mowi Premiership sees Kingussie make the trip up to Strathpeffer to take on Caberfeidh. Ahead of the match, we spoke to the recipient of last year’s Albert Smith Medal, Ruaridh Anderson.

You hit 7 against Cabers earlier in the season – will you look to repeat this dominance on Saturday?

We’re under no illusion it’ll be a different game up at Castle Leod. We’ve struggled there in the past so our last encounter at the dell doesn’t necessarily give us an indication on how this game may go. They have some of the best players in the game who on their day can beat anyone so we’re expecting a very difficult 90 minutes. We’ll go into the game hoping to score some goals whilst keeping their forwards as quiet as possible.

A late strike from Fort William on Saturday was enough to put them level on points with yourselves a third of the way through the season – does having this challenge force the team to up their game?

I can’t quite believe we’re a third of the way through the season! At this stage I wouldn’t say there are any external motivators to spur us on. There is still plenty of Shinty to be played and as we’ve experienced things can change dramatically very quickly so we’re just focussing on the game at hand and trying to gain momentum with each one.

Your hat trick against Kinlochshiel puts you on 8 goals for this season – how do you feel your game is developing, and what are your goals for this season?

We’ve had to shuffle the team about a fair bit so far this season so it has been quite a good start for us. At this point in the year I think a good target is to try and find some rhythm in our performances and play consistently to a standard we are satisfied with, which we’ve not yet achieved this year. Personally I would always like to convert more of the chances I get, but if the team are scoring goals then I’m not too concerned about my own goal record.

Kingussie’s front line have spread the goalscoring out quite evenly – how enjoyable is it playing with so many players who know where the back of the net is?

I’d like to think we enjoy playing with one another. We’re in a fortunate position to have played through most of youth Shinty in the same forward line as well as had a good few years together in the premiership so know each other pretty well. This season we’ve had a good variety of scorers which hasn’t necessarily happened in recent years so it would be nice if we could all maintain the numbers. At the end of the day as long as we’re creating chances and there’s someone to put the ball in the back of the net that’s enough for me.
