Sunday the 11th of May saw the return of the Taynuilt Sixes for the first time since 2017. A total of 26 teams signed up to compete across three sections: Development; P5 & Under; P6/7.

The Development section had 7 teams signed up in what was a round robin format. A number of young players competed well throughout the day displaying great skills and hard work throughout. In the end Aberdour would come out on top although they were pushed all the way by a strong Ballachulish side who Aberdour edged out 2-0 and St Columba’s. Aberdour finished the league without losing a game or conceding a goal rounding off a great performance by the Fife youngsters.

The P5 & Under section was also a round robin format which had 6 teams competing this section was also closely contested with close games throughout. Once again Aberdour proved how strong they are at this age group coming out on top. They were pushed all the way for the title by a strong St Columba’s team who were beaten narrowly 1-0 by Aberdour and hosts Taynuilt who finished in 3rd spot.

Finally, the P6/7 section had 13 teams entered. These were split over 2 leagues of six and seven. This section was again played as a round robin and the winners of each league were to meet in the final. League A had Kyles, Taynuilt, 2 Gaels teams, Rockfield, Ballachulish and Arran who competed in their first mainland tournament using wooden sticks. It was Kyles Athletic who topped this section displaying dominant performances throughout the group not conceding a single goal. They were pushed by Gaels who won 5 of their 6 games in another impressive showing from the Glasgow side. Arran competed well in their first outing picking up 3 draws displaying the impressive work the islanders have done over the past year.

League B saw 6 teams Kilmory, Inveraray, Bute, Stirling, Rockfield and St Columba’s competing. This group was close with Inveraray coming out on top dropping only 1 point against Kilmory. Kilmory, Bute and St Columba’s were all closely competing in case of a slip up from Inveraray but this never happened. Inveraray also went through the league section without conceding a goal with impressing goalkeeping and defending throughout the group.

The final saw Kyles Athletic play Inveraray, the game started off as a close encounter with Kyles taking the lead after a few minutes. Inveraray responded quickly grabbing an equaliser a minute later. However, Kyles pushed on and led by the impressive Cairn Crowe pushed on a secured the victory in a 7-1 win.

Camanachd Association Chief Executive Officer Ruari Davidson presented the winning teams with medals and trophies as well as presenting a Player of the Tournament award to Cairn Crowe who was the catalyst behind his sides solid performances all day displaying his skills, fitness, tough tackling and clean hitting throughout although a special mention must go to his teammate Sorley Kerr who scored many of their goals.

Will Cowie from the Camanachd Association said this about the day “It was great to see the return of the Taynuilt Sixes. The turnout was excellent and there was great shinty on display from all the teams. Taynuilt Shinty Club provided incredible facilities, and credit must go to the volunteers for their work on the day. Hopefully we can bring this event back once again next year and look forward to seeing all the teams at the Macaulay Sixes at the start of June.”
