Strathglass Triumph in North Division 1, Securing Promotion

Strathglass have claimed the North Division 1 title with a commanding season, earning 35 points and securing promotion back to the Mowi National Division, shinty’s second-highest tier, after being relegated in 2023. Their impressive campaign was fuelled by top scorer Penri Jones, whose remarkable 32 goals spearheaded the team’s return to form.

The season began with a statement victory, defeating title holders Newtonmore 3-1 away in March. Strathglass maintained their momentum, although they were held to consecutive 3-3 and 2-2 draws against Fort William and Beauly, respectively. These early results showed both their potential and vulnerability, but they quickly found their rhythm.

April saw them edge out Glengarry 3-2 and dominate Lochcarron with a 6-1 victory. By the time May rolled around, Strathglass had hit their stride. A 5-0 win over Lovat and a hard-fought 5-3 triumph against Kinlochshiel put them firmly in the title race. A further victory against Lochcarron (5-1) cemented their position as serious contenders.

Though they stumbled in a narrow 5-4 loss to Inverness in June, Strathglass bounced back with a string of wins, including a 6-4 result over Beauly and an impressive 4-2 victory against Newtonmore. Throughout the season, Penri Jones continued to be a crucial figure, with his sharp finishing helping secure key victories, bagging the winning goal in the 4-3 win over Lovat and five in the 9-1 vanquishing of local rivals Glenurquhart in July.

The second half of the season showcased Strathglass’s determination. A 2-0 win over Skye in July was followed by a resounding 9-1 victory against Glenurquhart. With the team in fine form, they delivered another crucial win over Skye (3-1) and Glengarry (9-1) in August. Their consistency, particularly in front of goal, saw them rack up an astonishing 85 goals over the campaign.

Despite a few late-season challenges, including a hard-fought 3-3 draw with Kinlochshiel, Strathglass’s promotion was never in doubt. They capped off the season with a solid 2-0 away victory over Fort William in September, sealing their return to the Mowi National Division.

For Strathglass, the 2024 season marks not only redemption after last year’s relegation but also a signal of their ambitions moving forward. With a prolific attack and solid defence, they’ve set a high standard for their return to the national stage.

As they prepare for the challenges ahead, Strathglass can celebrate a successful campaign that has reignited hope and excitement for the future. Their return to the Mowi National Division promises thrilling contests, and they will undoubtedly be a team to watch next season.
