W M Donald Game of the Week - Lochaber vs Kilmallie

Calum MacDougall Interview

The W M Donald MacTavish Cup Quarter Final has thrown up a derby in Spean, as Lochaber face off against rivals Kilmallie. Ahead of the big game, we caught up with Kilmallie top scorer Calum MacDougall.

After a slow start Kilmallie have now won 3 on the bounce, scoring 18 in the process – what has been key in this up-turn in form?

We had been creating chances in our opening games, but just couldn’t seem to be able to convert these chances into goals. We had a bit of a rejig for the MacTavish game against Strathglass and things started to click. Since then our confidence has built and we’ve been able to continue playing well and scoring goals.

Kilmallie haven’t beaten Lochaber since 2021 – do you think you have a good chance of changing that his weekend?

I think we have as good a chance as ever. We all have belief in ourselves going into this game. On the other hand we are well aware of the ability that Lochaber have in their squad. It’ll be particularly interesting as we play them twice in three weeks.

You were on red-hot form in the 1st round of the MacTavish Cup scoring 5 – how did you feel that day?

Lucky! There was talk of me playing half back that day, so I was quite surprised when I was put into full forward. If you ask my good friend Lewis Birrel he’d agree. He reckons the ball just kept falling for me.

Will you be looking to replicate this form on Saturday?

I’m always looking to replicate good form but a win for the team is the most important aim for Saturday

You have a good crop of young players starting in the team – how good is it seeing them develop, and how important do you think this is for your future success?

It’s great to see the boys coming through and playing at the level we have known for years they could perform at. I think we forget how young some of our squad is, as they have been an integral part of the first team for a number of years now. I think this illustrates just how well they are doing.
