The Camanachd Association are delighted to announce Alan MacRae as the new Scotland men’s international manager.
Scotland welcome their Irish cousins to Bught Park on 25th October for the first home Mowi International since 2018 and on the back of a last gasp defeat in Ennis in 2024.
MacRae, who currently manages Glasgow Mid Argyll has a wealth of shinty experience having also managed Lovat and Beauly in his time. He has enjoyed a successful period with the Peterson Park outfit leading them to a first ever Balliemore Cup triumph in 2024 and to the Celtic Society Cup for the first time since 1980 in 2022.
An expert on the composite game having managed Scotland U21s from 2016-2019 and been a regular feature on the Scotland U17 Tour, MacRae brings an understanding of the physical and tactical requirements needed to compete at international level.
Speaking with pride about his appointment, Alan MacRae said:
“I am delighted to be named as the International Manager and I’m looking forward to assembling and working with what will be a skilful and exciting Scotland team, who will look to take the game to the Irish on home soil.
Having helped for many years in the shinty/hurling environment, I have no doubt of the value of the fixture and I fully realise that we will need to be totally committed and very well prepared in order to regain the Mowi International trophy.”
Camanachd Association Vice President Willie MacDonald said:
“Alan’s passion and knowledge of the composite game make him an ideal fit. His track record speaks for itself, and I’m confident he’ll get the best out of the players as we look to reclaim the Mowi International on home soil.”
MacRae will name a provisional squad for training sessions in the coming months before whittling that down to a 20-man squad for the encounter with Ireland at the end of October and will appoint a coaching team in the coming weeks.
This news comes in the wake of the Women’s Camanachd Association announcing Ross Brown as the Scotland women’s team manager making it a Glasgow Mid Argyll double act for the Scots.
