Derek ‘Deek’ Cameron from Fort William will take charge of his fourth Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final on September 17th at the Dell, Kingussie.
Deek played for Fort William throughout the 90s and is most famously remembered for scoring the fastest goal ever recorded in a Camanachd Final after just 7 seconds in 1992 – a game Fort William went on to win. In being selected to officiate this year’s final, Deek equals the record for most Camanachd Cup Finals refereed, he now shares this accolade with John Henderson (4).
Deek said: “I am delighted to be awarded my 4th Camanachd Cup Final, and in doing so getting the opportunity to equal the record for final appearances by a referee. If this final is anything like the previous finals I have officiated it should be a classic. With arguably the best two teams in shinty at this moment taking part, Macaulay Cup Champions Kingussie playing on a familiar surface and Lovat looking to make amends for their last three appearances, this should add some real spice. I always enjoy Camanachd Cup Final day, the build up to the match and of course the pleasantries afterwards. Backed up by my very capable support team I hope to provide a physical but fair final for the spectators and watching public to enjoy.
