Inveraray win Mowi South 2
Congratulations to Inveraray who won MOWI South Division 2 title with games to spare.
Inveraray were presented the Mowi South Division 2 title on the final day of the season after a 2-2 draw with Aberdour at Silversands, having been confirmed as champions in their previous game against Strachur-Dunoon. In what was a very strong campaign from the Winterton outfit, Aray scored an average of 6.4 goals per game, ensuring plenty of entertainment for fans of the yellow and blacks. Aside from a hiccup midseason against Tayforth and the final day draw with Aberdour after the title was wrapped up, Inveraray won every game in the league and enjoyed a run to the Sutherland Cup Quarter-Finals before being narrowly eliminated by North Division 1 Fort William.
Of the 77 goals they managed David Robertson was responsible for 18 – making him the top scorer in South 2 with teammates Ben Cameron and Ross Anderson completing the podium with 12 and 11 respectively. With such scoring prowess it is little wonder Inveraray were so successful this campaign!
Following their final match of the season, the Mowi South Division 2 Trophy and medals were handed over by Camanachd Association President Burton Morrison & Gary Paterson, Operations Director at MOWI Rosyth.
Speaking of Inveraray’s success, Manager Andrew McMurdo said:
“Winning South Division 2 has been a great collective achievement for the club and community. It has been a project we started 4 seasons ago. We had to look at a pathway from Primary to Youth and then onto Junior Shinty. The next step will be integrating the next generation of talent into Senior Shinty. This is something that has been hugely successful mostly down to the commitment of the group of players we have assembled.
This year the training, the focus and the willingness to work hard has taken us to the levels we have achieved.
If the players continue on this trend, we are confident that our five-year plan will come to fruition.
On a personal level it has been the most rewarding achievement outside of my family life. Seeing young men grow in confidence, learn transferable skills that has helped them develop their personal lives and all done with a backbone of senior figures there to guide and nurture their talents.
I have tried to instil a style and fluency of play that is synonymous with Inveraray’s ethos of quick decisive forward play and by far and large the whole team this year have taken to it.
We look forward to playing in South Division One next year and the challenges it will bring and I am confident that with the continued support of the community, which has been tremendous this season and playing the “Inveraray Way” we can bring more success to this great club and it’s community.”
