John Angus Gilles from Skye has refereed many of the Senior Finals in shinty and on September 18th will take charge of his first Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final.

John Angus first played shinty at age 10 where he was coached by the late, D R MacDonald & Finlay Nicol at Portree High. Following a long-playing career with Skye, John Angus was encouraged to take up refereeing by Astie Cameron and hasn’t looked back since. In his maiden year he took control of his first final – the 2009 Strathdearn Cup final and 12 years on he will be the man in the middle of a Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final for the first time.

John Angus has refereed the Strathdearn Final, Sutherland Cup Final, MacTavish Cup Final, Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final & was the 4th official at the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Finals in 2017 & 2019. However, 2017 wasn’t his first taste of being in a Camanachd Cup Final as he was part of the famous Skye Camanachd side who won the Camanachd Cup in 1990.

In 2017 both he and his son were given accolades by the Camanachd Association as he was awarded MOWI Referee of the Year and his son was the MOWI U17 Player of the Year.
