Lochside Rovers are Mowi South Division 1 champions after final day victory
Lochside Rovers clinched the Mowi South Division 1 title in a thrilling finale, defeating Glasgow Mid Argyll 7-2 to claim the championship by two points over Kilmory. Their win on the final day capped off a superb season, securing their promotion after a consistent campaign of strong performances.
From the very beginning, Lochside Rovers demonstrated their quality. A hard-fought 1-0 win over Kilmory in March set the tone for their title charge, followed by commanding victories over Ballachulish (4-0) and Aberdour (3-1). These early wins established Lochside as serious contenders for the title, with their attack playing a key role throughout the season.
Jordan Kerr emerged as one of the standout performers for Lochside Rovers, finishing the season with 12 goals to his name, leading the line for a team that consistently found the back of the net. Alongside him, Lewis Buchanan and Ross Campbell also contributed vital goals, ensuring Lochside remained at the top of the table as the season progressed.
Although a 2-1 loss to Kilmory in June briefly threatened their title challenge, Lochside Rovers showed great resilience. They bounced back with crucial victories, including a 3-0 triumph over Ballachulish in July and a 6-1 win against Ardnamurchan, ensuring they stayed in the hunt for the title.
Facing Glasgow Mid Argyll on the final day of the season, Lochside needed a win to secure the championship. They rose to the occasion with a stunning 7-2 victory, sealing their place as champions and ensuring Kilmory, who finished two points behind, had to settle for second place despite their strong season.
Lochside Rovers finished the campaign with 22 points, scoring 46 goals and conceding only 12, highlighting their balanced approach of attacking prowess and defensive solidity. This year’s league title is the first triumph since 2017 and will be rightly celebrated by all in red and black.
Lochside Captain Calum MacMillan said: “I am proud and feel privileged to have been captain of Lochside Rovers this season and to have led my team to success in both the Bullough Cup and South Division 1 all of which wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my team mates and managers, my dad David MacMillan and cousin Duncan MacMillan.”
Lochside Manager David MacMillan said: “It’s been a privilege for myself assisted by Duncan MacMillan and also helped out by Scott Buchanan to manage this team back to winning silverware. It wouldn’t have been possible without the backing of a hard working committee and also the cooperation from Gareth & Iain at 1st team but most of all the players have been fantastic to deal with and we look forward to building on this success next season.”
