In honour of Donella Crawford, a huge advocate of the girls’ game, the Donella Crawford sixes give secondary school girls from all over Scotland an opportunity to gather and play shinty. On Wednesday 13th November, Ardnamurchan High School hosted the tournament once again, with 19 teams (138 girls) competing.

The weather did not want to cooperate on what was expected to be a sunny and dry day, but the rain did not stop the running of the day or the enthusiasm to play shinty.

The teams were split into 2 groups and played across 4 pitches. In the group stages each team played each other once allowing for the top two teams from each league to progress into the Semi Finals. The day proved to be a showcase of some great shinty and well fought games. In Group A Plockton and Kingussie progressed into the semi-finals, with Glenurquhart and Lochaber progressing from Group B.

Plockton and Glenurquhart came out on top securing a place in the final.

The final was an end to end showcase with not a lot separating the two determined teams, however, it was Glenurquharts Rowan Brockie that got the first goal. Plockton then responded with a goal from Abi MacRae, ending full time equalised. Extra time commenced with Glenurquhart again taking the lead, following a well worked goal from Isla Strachan. A determined Plockton team responded right before the final whistle of Extra Time with a goal from Lexie MacKenzie.

It came down to Penalties to determine the winner of the 2024 Donella Crawford and it was Plockton High School that was able to retain their victory. Commiserations to Glenurquhart High School who never gave up.

Ardnamurchan High School’s New Head Teacher, Laura Hannah, made the presentations and presented Plockton Captain, Lexie MacKenzie, with the Donella Crawford Trophy.

The Camanachd Association would like to give a massive thanks to everyone at Ardnamurchan High School for hosting and helping to organise such a successful event – the staff, the young ambassadors, Parents and Active Schools. A huge thank you also goes to Roslyn, Layla, Freddie and Jacob for taking the time to referee the tournament.
