Mowi Game of the Week - Skye II vs Fort William II

Mark Grant Interview

The Strathdearn Cup final takes place between Skye II and Fort William II this Saturday at Balgate. Ahead of the game we spoke to Fort captain Mark Grant!

Mark, a big game as you take on Skye in the Strathdearn Cup Final this Saturday, how have preparations been going?

Preparations for the final have been going well. We have been pushing for good attendance at training, so week by week we can work on what we think we could improve on from the previous game.

Both teams are flying high in North 1 and vying for the title too, does that give this game an extra edge?

Yeah, with both teams competing for the league it naturally gives the game a bit more edge, but our main focus is taking it week by week and focusing on the task in hand which until our next league match is the final.

You are currently top of the tree – how much confidence does that give you going into this game?

Yeah, being top give us confidence, but the team are also on a high after also progressing through to the Sutherland final.

Skye are one of the only teams to beat you this season, what kind of strengths do they have as a side that you will need to be aware of going into Saturday?

Skye on the island are always a tough nut to crack and going up there earlier in the season with a very young team and no manager was always going to be a big ask. They are a very physical team and play some nice shinty. But I’d say we have the upper hand on experience. We have a few players who have the experience of major finals in both first and second team shinty over the last nearly 20 years. That experience definitely helps to instil a calmness in some of the younger lads that might not have played in a final before.
