Mowi Game of the Week - Kingussie vs Lovat
Thomas Borthwick Interview
This Saturday, the reigning Mowi Premiership champions welcome Lovat to The Dell. Ahead of the game, we caught up with Kingussie captain Thomas Borthwick.
You carried on last season’s form into the clashes with Beauly and Skye – how important was it to start off with a win?
It’s really important to get off to a good start. We knew it was going to be a tough game, just like the last few encounters that we have had against them, so we were delighted to get off to a winning start.
Lovat were also victorious in the opening match week – do you think it’ll be a tough contest at The Dell?
Definitely, especially going off our last game against them in the Scottish final. They have some great players so we will need to be on top form to hopefully pick up another two points.
How did it feel to be named Kingussie captain for the 2025 season?
I’m delighted to be captain for this season. I think I was due to be captain around 2016 but had a couple years out so nice to now get my turn and hopefully try and help the club to more success this season.
You were named in last seasons Mowi Premiership Captain’s team of the season – how are you looking to build on a successful season on a personal level?
On a personal level I’d like to play more games this year. I missed a few games in the early and middle parts of the season due to injuries, so hopefully I can just stay fit and play week in week out.
Kingussie’s second team also had a very successful season last year – are you backing your young stars to make the step up to the first team this season?
The second team had a great season last year and hopefully they can do similar things this year in a tougher league. There’s a few boys knocking at the door for the first team and some even younger just starting their second team careers all with plenty of talent so I’m sure some will feature for the first team at some point this season.
