Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Semi Final - Kingussie vs Fort William
Rory MacKeachan Interview
The quest for the greatest prize in Shinty continues this weekend, as Kingussie take on Fort William at Bught Park in the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Semi Finals. Ahead of the big match we spoke to Kingussie’s 2021 captain Rory MacKeachan!
It’s a trip up to Inverness to face Fort William in the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup semis – how are you feeling ahead of the game?
I’m really looking forward to this one. I grew up watching our first team playing Fort William in semi’s and finals and managed to play in a few myself, so it’s exciting to have this fixture back on the Bught pitch. Last week’s result has injected some confidence into the camp as well.
It’s the second semi final in two weeks for Kingussie – how important was it to bounce back in a strong manner after the disappointment vs Kinlochshiel?
It was make or break for us to be honest. We knew we absolutely had to go out and perform or it would have put a huge dent in our season. Training in between the loss and the semi last week was top class and I think it was the shake up we needed.
You were MOTM on Saturday against Newtonmore – are you hoping to continue that form into Saturday’s game?
The whole squad were brilliant last weekend. I was happy with my performance, especially as I’m just starting to adapt into a new position. If the whole team play the way they did, it makes everyone’s jobs easier.
A 2-2 draw earlier on in the season shows how evenly matched the two sides are – what did you make of them that day, what do you think their strengths are and how can you get at them?
I actually missed that game through injury unfortunately. But I’ve watched it back and was impressed by Fort’s pace and tenacity. They’re a very similar aged team to us and I think a lot of comparisons can be made.
Zander Michie made his return to the squad on Saturday after getting some minutes for the 2nds earlier in the day – how big a boost is this to the team at such a crucial point in the season?
Zander’s journey back to shinty has been nothing short of incredible. The big man has worked harder than anyone and he’s surpassed all expectations to get back to were he is. He’s been an absolute inspiration to the whole team and he’s getting stronger every day. Loving having him back in red and blue!
