Newtonmore vs Glenurquhart
Alfie MacLeod Interview
Saturday sees the Mowi National Division leaders Glenurquhart take on the holders of the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup in Newtonmore. Glenurquhart have won all but 1 of their last games since they last took on Newtonmore, and we spoke to Scotland u17 Attacker Alfie MacLeod to get his thoughts ahead of the game.
It’s a trip to face the holders of the cup Newtonmore this week, how are you feeling ahead of the game?
I’m feeling confident. The moral in the team is really good after a hard fought win against Beauly last Friday. With Newtonmore winning the Camanachd last year, all the pressure is on them to retain it and we won’t make it easy for them.
You’ve already netted against Newtonmore this season, do you think you can repeat this feat again?
I would like to score again this time around against Newtonmore. We are working well as a team this year and creating a lot of chances which has resulted in us scoring a lot more goals. Every single one of our forwards are very capable of scoring and I’m sure the other lads fancy their chances as well.
What will the team have to do to try and nick a result against such a strong side?
We have to keep it tight in defence and apply as much pressure as we can going forward. We will definitely have to have a high work rate as we are playing against the top of the Premiership. Moral is high at training this week as we are relishing this challenge, the Premiership is where we are all obviously wanting to be playing week in week out.
Looking towards the league, Glenurquhart hold a healthy lead at the top, are you confident of maintaining the good form and returning to the Mowi Premiership come the end of the season?
We have 6 very tough games left in the league, we are all working hard. Our main focus this seasons was to get Glenurquhart back into the Premiership and we have to keep working hard to achieve that. We have a good, young, and passionate team that are in a good place going forward and we believe could compete at the top.
You hit your 9th goal of the season on Friday, how do you feel your own game has progressed this season?
I feel like my game has been improving a lot recently. Training has been fantastic and also pretty brutal. My fitness is probably at an all time high and I feel like I am finding the back of the net a lot more consistently now which is what I have been looking to improve. I am enjoying my shinty a lot more recently as well, we have a really good team spirit which is have a great impact on everyone’s performances.
