Sunday the 27th of October saw the W.J Cameron finals take place at Mossfield Park in Oban. Glen Urquhart, Lovat and Kyles Athletic all participated in the finals on what proved to be a blustery day. Games were 17 minutes each way in a round robin format with the team who accumulated the most points taking home the trophy.

The first game saw Kyles Athletic taking on Glen Urquhart. The game was end to end with both teams creating some chances but it was Glen Urquhart who were creating the clearer chances. Midway through the first half Glen Urquhart took one of their chances when a lovely take down allowed Glen Macdonald to turn his marker and take the ball into space just outside the D where he slotted the ball into the bottom left-hand corner giving the keeper no chance. This gave Glen the lead going into half time.

The second half continued in the same fashion and 5 minutes after the restart Daniel Van Loon found space around 25 yards from goal where he sent a blistering drive from the right hand side into the top left hand corner of the net.

A couple of minutes later Van Loon again found space from around 15 yards out and his low strike found the bottom corner to give Glen Urquhart a 3-0 lead with around 10 minutes to play.

However, Glen Urquhart didn’t have it all their own way and with 6 minutes remaining in the game Ethan Kerr found the net after a nice turn to bring the score back to 3-1.

2 minutes later having been out of the game Kyles reduced the deficit to 1 goal when Roan McVicar slammed home into the roof of the net from the edge of the D giving the keeper no chance.

Kyles completed the comeback with 2 minutes to go when another neat finish from Kerr from 15 yards completed the remarkable come back and ending the game 3-3.

The 2nd game saw Lovat face Kyles. The game went in a similar fashion to the first when Lovat took an early lead through Craig Dingwall who finished well at the back post following a cross and a nice team move.

Lovat then doubled their lead at the start of the 2nd half when Hayden Macdonald’s strike from distance made its way past the goalkeeper to put Lovat in a commanding position with just over 10 minutes to play.

Kyles then pushed late on again but once Roan McVicar scored a goal with 5 minutes to play the game was well seen out by Lovat to secure the 2 points.

This result meant that going into the last game between Lovat and Glen Urquhart that in the Kiltarlity side secured a draw that would be enough for them to win the trophy.

The final game started with Lovat coming out of the blocks sharply and after a couple of minutes they took the lead through Brodie Campbell West. Despite pressure for the rest of the half from Lovat Glen Urquhart kept the score to one at half time.

Early in the 2nd half Glen Urquhart’s danger man Glen Macdonald found himself some space to levelled the scores with 10 minutes left to play.

A few minutes later Craig Dingwall put Lovat back into the lead with a strike from around 10 yards finding the roof of the net from an angle.

However, just 2 minutes after they had gone behind Macdonald again equalised bringing the game back to 2-2 with less than 5 minutes to play.

Lovat pushed for a late goal and looked the more likely of the teams to get the winner however a swift move from Glen Urquhart resulted in Macdonald managing to turn his marker and slip the ball past the keeper and finding the back of the net. The game hardly had time to restart when the game came to an end.

This result meant that Glen Urquhart won on the day with 3 points, Lovat finished in 2nd with 2 point and Kyles finishing with 1 point on what proved to be a very competitive day of shinty.

A massive thanks has to go to the coaches, parents and teams who travelled down to Mossfield in a last-minute change of venue. All the teams put on a great day of shinty which could have been won by any of the 3 teams involved. A massive thanks to Ian Hay and his team who had the pitch in immaculate condition for the game.
