On Thursday the 19th of June High schools from all over Scotland gathered at Mossfield, Oban for the 2025 Macpherson Cup. Kingussie, Oban, Portree, Ardnamurchan, Lochgilphead and Glasgow Gaelic School were all in attendance.
All teams were to play each other once, with the top two teams progressing to the final. Last years winners Kingussie High were looking to pick up were they left of, and they did just that. They won all 5 games, scoring 19 and conceding 0 in a very impressive group stage run making them our first finalist. With Kingussie dominating the group stage, it left 2nd place completely in the balance.
Teams were desperate to pick up points with Portree and Oban looking most likely to pick up the 2nd place spot. Nothing could separate them in their game, with it finishing 1-1 leaving both teams on 5 points. Portree advanced due to a +4 goal difference against Obans +2 making it a Kingussie Portree final. Portree were looking to cause an upset, with their group stage game ending 2-0 to Kingussie in a closely contested game.
However the final couldn’t have started any worse for Portree as they conceded to a great Toby Thain strike on 45 seconds giving the kings a early lead. Portree tried to come back applying some pressure on the Kingussie goal, but giving Keeper Hayden Taylor-Ramsey little to do. The game was more or less put beyond them on the 5th minute mark as Josh Stewart doubled kings lead to make it 2-0 just before half time.
Kingussie came out in the second half in their flowing best, creating chance after chance and a quick fire double from the Hitman James Coyle gave Kingussie one hand on the trophy. Last minute goals from Joe Coyle and Toby Thain again meant the game finished a convincing 6-0 win to Kingussie, with Portree more than playing their part.
Captains on the day Hayden Taylor- Ramsey and Joe Coyle went up to collect the Macpherson Cup, giving the Kings back to back wins in the competition. A massive thank you goes to Mossfield, Oban for the excellent facilities, Stephen Campbell for referring and to Davie Hamilton and Alan Hill for doing the scores!
