Mowi Game of the Week - Uddingston vs Inveraray

Eilidh Barclay Interview

For game week 16 we focus our sights on the WCA Mowi South League, as high flying Inveraray make the trip to North Lanarkshire to take on Uddingston. Ahead of the game we spoke to Uddy’s top scorer Eilidh Barclay.

You take on Inveraray in the Mowi South Division this weekend, how are you looking forward to the game?

I’m really looking forward to seeing how the team gets on against Inveraray. The last time we played them, it was a physical, enjoyable and skill-demanding game, so I’m expecting another good challenge. We found our rhythm a bit later than we’d hoped last time, so this weekend we’re aiming to start strong and find our game early.

Uddingston are a developing club – how have you seen the club grow in recent years?

It’s been amazing to see the club grow over the past few years. The women’s team especially has seen more new faces than ever, with a number of players making their debuts this season. We’ve gone through a bit of a shift recently with some experienced players moving on and amazing new women and younger girls joining, so there’s been a big focus on restructuring. I’m really proud of how resilient the women’s team have been, every team and individual win within our games has reflected the hard work we’ve put in at training. I’m excited to see how we continue to develop together over the next few years. More widely, the growth of the club as a whole has been incredible, with Lee Thompson being the driving force. From school sessions to a minis team, U14s, and both men’s and women’s teams competing in leagues and cups. It’s inspiring!

What do you see as the main draw that attracts new people to the club in a non-traditional shinty area?

One of the biggest draws is the social side. Uddingston Shinty Club brings people together from across Scotland and creates really strong bonds, both on and off the pitch. It’s something a bit different, and I think that’s part of what makes it exciting to try. It’s a great way for people to connect in a fun and inclusive environment, where you can challenge yourself physically and mentally.

You’re Uddy’s top scorer with 3 strikes this season, how do you feel your own game is going right now?

I unfortunately picked up an injury early in the season, so just now my main focus is on rehab and getting back on the pitch as soon as I can. Before that, I was really enjoying my shift from playing upfront to both wing centre and centre mid – I’ve worked hard on my fitness and strength, which I think has reflected in my game. There’s always more to work on of course and I can’t wait to get back on the pitch and improve. I absolutely love being the captain for the team and have enjoyed how playing in the midline has given me opportunities to read the game in a different way.
