Kingussie High School defended their Great Glen School’s Shinty Sixes title, defeating Charleston Accademy in golden goal extra time at Blairbeg Park, Drumnadrochit on the 6th October.
The competition, celebrating its 30th year, saw teams from across the Highlands coming together to take part at a dry and breezy Blairbeg Park, which thankfully did not suffer any effects from storm Amy.
After the league stages, hosts Glen Urquhart High School, Lochaber High School, Charleston Academy and Kingussie High School all progressed through to the semi final stage.
Charleston Academy ran out 3 – 0 winners against Lochaber High, whilst Glen Urquhart High were pipped by Kingussie High School 2 – 1 after golden goal extra time.
The main final was an end to end exciting affair with Kingussie High taking an early lead through James Coyle, only for Charleston Academy to score two quick goals through Jay MacRae and Gurwinder Singh to take the lead. With the clock ticking down Kingussie took the final into golden goal extra time with a strike from Toby Thain. In the third minute of golden goal extra time, it was Toby Thain who again found the back of the net to win the competition for Kingussie High School.
Hosts Glen Urquhart High School ran out 1 – 0 winners through a goal from Glenn MacDonald to claim third spot against Lochaber High School.
Event Organiser Allan MacLeod thanked sponsors Highland Industrial Supplies for their continued support, Glen Urquhart and Strathglass Shinty Club’s for their assistance in making the day possible, to Callum McLeod and Alfie MacLeod for refereeing the competition and to the teams for taking the time to trave to take part in the competition.
Garry Mackintosh of sponsors Highland Industrial Supplies presented the medals and then the trophy to the winning Kingsussie High School Captain James Coyle. There was further cheer for Kingussie High School when Toby Thain was awarded player of the tournament.
Laura Fraser of Glen Urqhart High School, along with Garry Mackintosh, President of Glen Urquhart Shinty Club and Roddy MacLennan, President of Strathglass Shinty Club made a presentation to Allan MacLeod to mark his thirty years of service to the competition.
