Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Creating a diverse and inclusive culture across Shinty.
Diversity means...
Acknowledging the fact that
everyone is different, has different
experiences, skills and needs
Equality means...
Giving everyone equal access to an opportunity
Equality does not mean treating everyone the same way
Inclusion means...
Valuing difference
Removing barriers to participation
Making everyone feel included
Diversity is a fact.Inclusion is what we do!
Shinty is a diverse sport with employees, volunteers, participants, coaches, fans and the wider Shinty community coming from a range of backgrounds with diverse identities. Shinty is committed to being diverse and inclusive but recognises that being diverse isn’t the same as being inclusive. It’s up to everyone across Shinty to think about how to make everyone feel included, whatever our personal beliefs, values and opinions.
The Camanachd Association aim to enhance opportunities for lifelong engagement with our sport and for people that face barriers to participation including girls, women. people with disabilities and people living in rural communities
Impact of Discrimination
Help create an inclusive Shinty where diversity is valued and discrimination is recognised, addressed and prevented from happening again in the future
Discrimination can…
- affect performance
- discourage people from participating
- encourage further discriminatory behaviour
- tarnish the reputation of the sport
- impact sponsorship
- create an unsafe environment for particular
communities, groups of individuals
- have regulatory, legal and financial repercussions
What is Discrimination
Discrimination occurs when someone is
treated less favourably because of…
- part of their identity
- something we assume about their identity
- the identity of people they associate with
If that treatment is because of/makes reference to:
- age
- disability
- gender reassignment
- marriage & civil partnership
- pregnancy & maternity
- race
- religion or belief
- sex
- sexual orientation
it may be discrimination (Equality Act 2010)
Inclusion
Help create an inclusive Shinty where
diversity is valued and discrimination is recognised, addressed and prevented from happening again in the future.
Inclusion in shinty helps
- send a strong message that Shinty is for everyone
- increase participation across the industry
- attract and retain the best talent
- fulfil everyone’s potential
- support everyone to be themselves
- avoid “Group Think” → drive innovation and creativity
- maintain a positive image and reputation
- meet our legal obligations
- recognise and address discrimination

Mental Health Charter for Physical Activity and Sport
As a charter signatory, we aim to improve the equality and reduce discrimination for anyone with a mental health problem
The following areas of priority also help us deliver our duty for equality, diversity and inclusion:
- Mental Health Charter for Physical Activity and Sport: As a Charter signatory, we aim to improve equality and reduce discrimination for anyone with a mental health problem
- We recognise people in rural areas can find it difficult to access sport because of limited public transport, or fewer opportunities than urban areas. Supporting local clubs we aim to break down the barriers of rural disadvantage and provide meaningful opportunities to participate in shinty.
The Camanachd Association will endeavour through our policies, procedures, actions and decision-making to ensure that no employee, volunteer or member receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of age, sex, gender identity, disability, marital or civil partnership status, pregnancy or maternity, religion, race, ethnic origin, nationality, socioeconomic status or sexual orientation.
In addition The Camanachd Association recognises that we live in a diverse society and will endeavour to ensure that all employees, volunteers and members are given the same opportunity regardless of their socio-economic background.
The Camanachd Association is committed to ensuring equitable access to Camanachd and fair treatment for all who wish to participate.
